Weight Loss Pills Could Have Heavy Price
WONG:
And next… weight loss, but at what price?
The cost could be heavy for some consumers who’ve sought the aid of so-called “natural” diet pills from China.
In an ongoing investigation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration—or F.D.A.—is expanding its list of potentially dangerous weight-loss pills. It found that some manufacturers—mostly from China—were adding pharmaceutical drugs to these pills to make them more potent. The labels didn’t tell consumers what they’d added—and that makes it illegal.
Doctors say some of these drugs can have severe side effects. And because these ingredients are undeclared, or not fully identified, such problems could be hard to diagnose.
The F.D.A. continues to investigate the tainted pills. It’s still unknown who was responsible for the dangerous drugs.
